The Clark County Chapter of Teach One to Lead One is actively mentoring students at five public schools in Vancouver during the 2015-2016 school year, including Sifton Elementary. Principal Angie Mitchell can't say enough about impact this one-on-one mentoring program has had on her most challenged students.

The greatest factor in turning an at-risk kid's life around is the mentors in their life. Our mentors develop close relationships with the kids they teach. Some kids may have never had a positive influence like a Teach One to Lead One mentor. With only a few months in the program, teachers begin to see the impact of the mentors' commitments as students' grades begin to rise and attitudes change.

Teach One to Lead One is a community mentoring program that teaches universal principles to lead at-risk kids to a life of purpose and potential. By directly putting qualified mentors into classrooms, they offer a positive influence that many at-risk kids have never had. More than 500 At-Risk students are being served by 85 mentors in 5 Clark County schools this year.

Every day, our mentors bring principles directly into the classrooms that need it most. These principles are not native to Teach One to Lead One—people have always used ideas like integrity and courage into practice to make life better for themselves and others. Mentors encourage at-risk kids to make these principles into habits for their day-to-day lives: Respect, Integrity, Self-Control, Courage, Humility, Excellence, Compassion, Enthusiasm, Teamwork, and Honor.

Now in their 3rd year of partnership with Sifton Elementary, the focus is specifically on 4th and 5th graders. The results have been significant, especially with regards to disciplines issues—a dramatic drop in discipline interactions has been directly attributed to the influence of mentors in these student's lives. With the success of the program at Sifton, the hope is to bring this mentoring program to other Evergreen District Schools.
