New Horizons for SPN

As the School Partnership Network (SPN) begins its third school-year of ministry in Greater Portland, we are eyeing some exciting new opportunities that we believe will further strengthen and encourage partnerships between our public schools and the local faith community. Our strength—and our mission—is to bring together diverse groups, and help facilitate collaborations that will serve the needs of school-aged children and their families. In the past we've encouraged these collaborations by arranging events that help connect communities, like the "Pastors and Principals Gatherings" (P&P). We've also offered resources in our newsletter and website. Moving forward, we have new ideas on the horizon to help move these partnerships toward increasingly deeper and meaningful levels.

Building on the success of our "Pastors and Principals Gatherings" (P&P) which have been held in 13 different districts within the greater Portland/Vancouver metro area, we are now laying the groundwork for an interactive training seminar we refer to as "School Partnerships 2.0." While the intent of each P&P gathering has always been to bring together school district principals and administrators with local pastors and ministry leaders serving within the district's boundaries, the targeted audience for the "2.0" gatherings will primarily be the classroom teachers and the volunteers serving at their school, especially those from the partnering churches and ministries.

Working with our own partners, like "UNDIVIDED" and other faith-based ministries focused on serving our local schools, this 2 – 2.5 hour seminar will be completely focused on developing partnerships, and how these partnerships can be lived out in real life. We will explore commonly discovered "best practices," review case studies on how these partnerships are working in other cities, and provide some practical tips and instructions that will help deepen these relationships. Our goal is to see people leave these gatherings with new ideas and renewed excitement about the possibilities of serving the families in their community together.

Two districts have been identified for the initial launch of this new SPN program: the Beaverton School District and the North Clackamas School District. Pilot offerings are being scheduled for early spring of 2016. We hope to expand this new program in additional districts during the 2016-2017 school year.
