An Active Partnership with Colossae Church.

When Pastor Chuck Bomar decided to plant a church in the Tigard-Tualatin area he knew in his heart he was not just planting a place for folks to worship. He wanted Colossae Church to be a place where people came to also learn how to serve their local community.

Early on Chuck and his congregation realized the tremendous need that was evident in the Tigard-Tualatin School District. It quickly became obvious that one of the places his new, thriving congregation could make an impact was by developing a partnership with their community schools. That's when he discovered an opportunity to come alongside of the Tigard-Tualatin Family Resource Center.

The Tigard-Tualatin Family Resource Center serves families living within the boundaries of the Tigard-Tualatin School District. Center staff provide a variety of direct services and help families navigate the social service system so they can gain access to the community resources they need. Basic needs items are available on an emergency basis. The availability of these items depends on both cash and in-kind donations from generous community partners and individuals.

Members from Colossae Church quickly took to the challenge of helping the staff at the Family Resource Center meet some of the overwhelming needs of the students and families in their district. Ally Kinnaman, now a Board member of the FRC, began to serve as a volunteer coordinator for the various opportunities, first solely from the church and then for the entire center. Following the lead of the Colossae congregation, things began to change as other churches and community partners came on board.

Ally and other members of Colossae Church have been instrumental in getting Safe Families going in the local community, "Safe Families is a volunteer movement that connects the children of parents in distress with host families who have been called to open their hearts, their arms and their homes to serve those in need", as well as the yearly and very popular Compassion Clinic at Tigard High providing needed medical, dental, vision and other services at no charge, Tigard High's Backpack Program offering food for kids on free lunch to take home, volunteering at CFT Elementary Lunch Buddy Program, sponsoring numerous school families with toys and food at Christmas as well as many other supports and resources for those in need.

Today the FRC itself is thriving:

• The Tigard-Tualatin Family Resource Center (TTFRC) serves approximately 2,000 families a year.

• Staff assist in the coordination of sponsorship efforts to give toys and food to children in need for the holidays. Through the efforts of local churches, civic groups and individuals, more than 750 families received help during the 2014 holiday season.

• Volunteers make many center programs possible.

• All members of the center's friendly staff are bilingual in Spanish.

• TTFRC publishes an annual community resource guide to help families, school district staff, and community partners navigate local resources.

• TTFRC is located on the same campus as two other resources for school district families: the Caring Closet and the School-Based Health Center at Tigard High

The center is located on the campus of Tigard High School in a portable in the staff and visitor parking lot, behind the swim center. The center's proximity to two other valuable community resources — the Caring Closet and the School-Based Health Center at Tigard High — provides convenient "one-stop shopping" for families.

The staff of the center invite you to come visit the center any time during open hours on school days:

Monday - Thursday 9am - 12pm and 1pm - 3p
